Peptides are chains of amino acids held together by bonds that can break down under heat, light, or repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Once a peptide degrades, its structure changes, and results generated with a degraded sample may no longer reflect the compound a researcher intended to test.
Cold chain shipping refers to keeping a product within a controlled temperature range from the moment it leaves storage until it reaches the end user. Lyophilized, or freeze-dried, peptides are relatively stable at room temperature for short periods, but reconstituted or liquid peptides are far more sensitive and typically need refrigeration throughout transit.
Extended exposure to heat is one of the most common causes of reduced potency in shipped peptides. A vial left in a hot delivery vehicle or a mailbox for several days can lose measurable purity even if it looks unchanged.
What researchers can do: store vials according to the supplier's instructions as soon as they arrive, check for visible signs of temperature exposure such as clumping or discoloration, and avoid letting reconstituted peptides sit at room temperature for extended periods between uses.
